Talk therapy is a general term for therapy where a person works with a trained therapist by talking through thoughts, feelings, experiences, and patterns in a safe, confidential setting.
Here’s what it’s typically like, step by step:
The first few sessions
• The therapist asks about current concerns and goals
• They may ask about family, relationships, health, or past experiences
• You set a direction together (for example: less anxiety, better communication, healing from trauma)

It’s normal to feel nervous at first. A good therapist moves at your pace.
What happens during sessions
Sessions last 60 minutes and might include:
• Talking about recent events or emotions
• Exploring patterns (for example, “This keeps happening when I feel criticized”)
• Learning coping or communication skills
• Reflecting feelings back to help clarify them
• Gently challenging unhelpful beliefs
Some sessions feel lighter; others feel heavy. Both are normal.
What it feels like emotionally
People often experience:
• Relief from being heard without judgment
• Emotional release (sometimes tears, sometimes anger)
• New insights (“Oh… that’s why I react that way”)
• Temporary discomfort as difficult topics surface
How often and how long
• Usually weekly or biweekly
• Short-term therapy may last a few months
• Deeper work (especially trauma or relationship patterns) can take longer.
Progress isn’t always linear—there are ups and downs.
Therapy shouldn’t feel unsafe or shaming. If it does, that’s a sign to speak up or find a better fit.
How it differs from trauma-focused therapy
Traditional talk therapy:
• Focuses on understanding and insight
• Helps with coping and communication
• Works well for stress, grief, and relationship issues
For PTSD or trauma:
• Talking alone can help, but may not fully calm the nervous system
• Many people combine talk therapy with EMDR, somatic therapy, or CBT

What therapy is not
• Not being told what to do
• Not just venting without direction
• Not being judged or “fixed.
